Seniors in Alabama who are 60 years and older with a low income are eligible to apply for a free $50 benefit card under the federal Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP), which is run by the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries Farmers Market Authority Section. This card can be used to buy honey, fresh fruits, herbs, and vegetables from approved farmers markets and vendors. The program has limited resources available, so priority is given to early applicants. Although the program has reached its limit for 2025, applications for 2026 will open in mid-January next year. Pharmacists are encouraged to inform their patients about this benefit so they can take advantage of it as soon as applications become available. Individuals who received the benefit this year must reapply next year, as approval is only valid for one year. The list of SFMNP-approved farmers markets and stands in Alabama can be found here.
