How Pharmacists Can Increase Adult Vaccines Uptake

Adult vaccination coverage remains low, with more than 70% of adults yet to complete their routinely recommended vaccines. As the most accessible healthcare providers, pharmacists are uniquely positioned to help reach a larger number of these adults and improve vaccination rates. Pharmacists can achieve this by strongly recommending vaccines to their patients and implementing the following proven strategies (immunize.org):

  1. Assess the vaccination coverage at their pharmacy and develop strategies to improve it.

  2. Develop standard operating procedures for adult vaccination and train pharmacy personnel on how to implement them.

  3. Use reminder and recall systems to notify both patients and pharmacy personnel about upcoming or overdue vaccinations.

  4. Increase patient access to vaccines through methods such as extending pharmacy hours to include evenings or weekends.

  5. Seek feedback from their team and immunization registries to track progress on vaccination services.
