Aging can bring major life changes including retirement, the loss of loved ones or pets, children moving away, or reduced mobility. These transitions can leave older adults with more time for reflection, sometimes leading to unwanted thoughts, sadness, or loneliness. Building and maintaining social connections can help older adults cope with these challenges and improve quality of life.

Older adults can stay engaged by joining community programs such as senior centers, faith‑based groups, walking clubs, arts groups, or peer support groups. These spaces offer companionship, may help them cope with grief or life transitions, and strengthen mental well‑being. Volunteering can also restore purpose and provide regular social interaction. Additionally, video calls, phone calls, and messaging apps can help maintain ties with family and friends, especially when mobility is limited.
As pharmacists, you can support mental health in older adults by encouraging social connection, initiating conversations about mental well-being, and identifying individuals who may benefit from additional support or resources. Encouraging older adults to speak with trusted family members, friends, clergy, or healthcare professionals when they feel isolated can also be beneficial.
The Alabama Department of Senior Services (ADSS) still offers programs that can help support healthy emotional and mental health in older adults. These include:
Elderly Nutrition Program: Provides meals at community sites, giving older adults a chance to socialize and build supportive networks.
Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP): Offers part‑time community service jobs for adults 55+, restoring routine, purpose, and daily social contact.
Caregiver Support Program: Helps older adults who are caregivers, as well as caregivers of older adults, manage stress and remain supported. This can strengthen the emotional and social environment for older adults at home.
We encourage you to visit the ADSS website to learn more about these programs and refer someone who may benefit from them.
